What you get to do:
- Direct the architecture and implementation of new software systems, and the evolution of our existing systems
- Identify present and future limits of the system and develop plans to mitigate or avoid them
- Understand and improve the relationship between organizational structure and software results
- Mediate business and technical requirements and constraints, leading to widely acceptable technical project directions
- Extremely strong individual technical contributor
- Operates as a technical center of excellence for one or more key systems
- Works directly on the most important/difficult technical implementations
- Coach and develop other engineers, including senior engineers, in areas of software architecture, implementation, communication, and leadership
- Model strong technical communication and non-adversarial critical thinking
- Be explicit in teaching others how to think about architectural considerations
- Initiate and oversee improvements to software development and operation processes and tooling
- Identify bottlenecks that are reducing impact of software organization
- Propose alternative approaches to alleviate bottlenecks
- Work with business and customer stakeholders to ensure that technical direction and delivery meets requirements and expectations
What you bring to the table:
- 8-10+ years of software development experience, 4+ of senior leadership
- Has had formal leadership responsibility for cross-functional technical projects
- Not necessarily management experience (not a disqualification, but mostly-management roles may not be the right experience if technical contributions are not significant)
- Developed other technical leaders in technical and general-professional ways
- Drove improvements in how the organization built and delivered software
- 1 or more senior roles on large scale/complexity platform (B2B or B2C both fine)
- High reliability requirements, 99.95%+ probably
- Platform consumed by external customers, not just internal
- Involved with (ideally as leader) major shift in what that platform was: e.g. technology migration, shift to new major use case
- Experience with large deployments on public cloud systems (AWS preferred but not required)
- Responsible for technical delivery of business-critical-for-customers software systems
- Our stack is chiefly Java/Python/K8S/AWS (RDS, Kinesis, EC2, EKS)
