The Fourth Law / TFL / Четвертий Закон is an autonomous robotics company focused on solving massively scalable autonomy for defensive FPV drones. The company has offices in the US, EU and Ukraine and is on a mission to increase the defensive capabilities of the Free World. Its name is a reference to Isaac Asimov’s three laws of robotics and the search for an enigmatic Fourth Law.
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to design and develop the physical architecture of our autonomous mobile robotic platform and its components. In this role, you will be responsible for the 3D modeling of mechanical components, ensuring they meet the structural, thermal, and weight requirements of a high-performance system. Operating within our Scrum framework, you will bridge the gap between digital design and physical production, working closely with the R&D team to integrate sensors, flight controllers, and power systems into a robust chassis.
Core Responsibilities
- Precision 3D Modeling: Develop detailed 3D models and assemblies for robotic components (chassis, sensor mounts, internal enclosures) using industry-standard CAD software.
- Design for Manufacturing (DfM): Prepare high-quality production documentation tailored for diverse manufacturing processes, with a heavy focus on 3D printing (SLA/FDM/SLS), CNC machining, and injection molding.
- Hardware Integration: Design specialized mechanical interfaces for high-bandwidth components, including MIPI-CSI camera modules, flight controllers, and radio systems.
- System Optimization: Conduct material selection and structural analysis to balance the platform’s weight, durability, and thermal management needs.
- Iterative Prototyping: Rapidly produce and test functional prototypes to validate physical models and mechanical fit before production deployment.
- Agile Collaboration: Participate in Scrum ceremonies, collaborating with software and R&D engineers to ensure the physical design supports the technical architecture.
Required Qualifications
- CAD Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion 360, or Onshape.
- Additive Manufacturing Expertise: Deep understanding of 3D printing technologies, including material properties, tolerances, and post-processing techniques.
- Technical Documentation: Proven ability to create precise 2D drawings, BOMs (Bills of Materials), and assembly instructions.
- Systems Thinking: Ability to design around the constraints of a mobile robotic platform, considering battery placement, center of gravity, and vibration isolation.
- Basic Simulation Skills: Capability to perform basic FEA (Finite Element Analysis) for structural integrity and thermal simulation.
Preferred Experience
- Robotics & UAV Design: Familiarity with the physical constraints of UAV/Drone hardware, including motor mounts and radio antenna placement.
- Mechatronics Integration: Experience designing enclosures for custom PCBs and protecting sensitive electronics in field environments.
- Prototyping Tools: Hands-on experience with workshop tools and maintaining a fleet of professional 3D printers.
- Collaborative Design: Experience using version control for hardware (e.g., GrabCAD) within an Agile/Scrum environment.
We Offer:
- Self-development and assistance.
- Market salary.
- Flexible/hybrid working hours.
- 24 paid days off per year + 14 additional days off for veterans.
