The Fourth Law / TFL / Четвертий Закон is an autonomous robotics company focused on solving massively scalable autonomy for defensive FPV drones. The company has offices in the US, EU and Ukraine and is on a mission to increase the defensive capabilities of the Free World. Its name is a reference to Isaac Asimov’s three laws of robotics and the search for an enigmatic Fourth Law.

We are seeking a proactive Safety Engineer to take ownership of the safety lifecycle for our autonomous robotic mobile platform. In this role, you will define, maintain, and enforce the safety rules and procedures that govern our development processes and the physical operation of our products. You will ensure that our team, testing environments, and the robotic systems operate within a framework of rigorous safety, mitigating risks from the lab to the field.

Core Responsibilities

  • Safety Framework Ownership: Develop and maintain comprehensive safety protocols for the development team, covering laboratory work, hardware handling, and high-energy battery management.
  • Product Safety Strategy: Define and monitor safety requirements for the robotic platform, ensuring that autonomous logic and hardware failsafes are integrated into the product’s core functionality.
  • Operational Risk Assessment: Conduct regular hazard analysis for new features and hardware integrations within our custom Linux environment.
  • Safe Testing Procedures: Establish and oversee rules for field testing and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL) validation, particularly regarding UAV flight and high-speed robotic movement.
  • Incident Investigation: Lead the analysis of any safety-related anomalies or “near-misses,” providing data-backed recommendations to the R&D and Software teams via Scrum ceremonies.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Maintain all necessary safety documentation, internal certifications, and compliance records required for partner integrations.
  • Safety Advocacy: Foster a “safety-first” culture within the Agile team, ensuring that safety logic is a primary consideration in our software architecture models.

Required Qualifications

  • Safety Engineering Background: Proven experience in a safety-focused role, ideally within a robotics, automotive, or industrial engineering environment.
  • Robotic Systems Literacy: Understanding of the physical and software risks associated with UAVs and mobile robots, including radio link loss (ELRS/MAVLink) and autonomous navigation.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to perform failure analysis (e.g., FMEA) and derive safety-driven requirements for C++ and Python implementations.
  • Process Management: Strong ability to document and communicate complex safety procedures clearly to a technical team.
  • Agile Mindset: Ability to integrate safety reviews and procedural updates into the Scrum lifecycle.

Preferred Experience

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with functional safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508.
  • UAV Safety: Experience with flight safety regulations and failsafe logic in PX4 or ArduPilot.
  • Linux System Awareness: Understanding of OS-level failsafes, watchdog timers, and system health monitoring in custom Linux environments.
  • Hardware Safety: Experience developing emergency stop (E-Stop) protocols and physical isolation procedures for mobile hardware.

We Offer:

  • Self-development and assistance.
  • Market salary.
  • Flexible/hybrid working hours.
  • 24 paid days off per year + 14 additional days off for veterans.
