Lead Java Engineer — Product-Focused

About the Role

Our client is a leading European provider of solutions for closing product, material, and logistics cycles, with a strong focus on recycling and sustainability.

We’re looking for a Senior Java Developer to help build and evolve long-term enterprise SaaS products. You’ll work closely with Product, UX, and Front-End teams, designing Java backends, influencing architecture, and contributing to product decisions.

The products operate across multiple European markets, combining complex business processes, country-specific requirements, regulations, and data-intensive workflows. You’ll help turn this complexity into reliable backend services and intuitive products.

You’ll also work with a multi-tenant, headless, microservice-oriented platform, solving challenges around scalability, data isolation, security, and maintainability.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement Java backends for new and existing products.
• Translate complex business requirements into domain models, data structures, and backend services.
• Work closely with Product, UX, and Front-End teams to shape effective solutions.
• Contribute to product decisions and challenge requirements when you see better alternatives.
• Help evolve the multi-tenant, headless, microservice-oriented architecture.
• Improve APIs, coding standards, CI/CD, and overall engineering practices.
• Take ownership of technical solutions from idea to implementation.
• Mentor junior engineers or lead technical initiatives if you’d like to grow in that direction.

Requirements

Must have

• 5+ years of professional Java development experience.
• Strong experience with Spring Boot and Hibernate/JPA.
• Strong knowledge of RESTful APIs.
• Strong experience with PostgreSQL and/or MySQL.
• Experience with SaaS and/or multi-tenant platforms.
• Experience working closely with Product, UX/Product Design, or other non-engineering teams.
• Ability to translate business requirements into clear technical solutions.
• Strong product mindset and willingness to challenge requirements constructively.
• Understanding of clean architecture, test automation, and technical trade-offs.
• Structured, analytical, and independent approach.
• Fluent English.

Nice to have

• Enterprise SaaS experience.
• Experience with multi-tenant architecture, data isolation, permissions, and scalability.
• Experience influencing product decisions or working with product data/customer feedback.
• AWS and Kubernetes.
• AWS SQS, Redis, or RabbitMQ.
• GitLab CI/CD and Terraform.
• React, Next.js, or TypeScript.
