As the Product Manager
— Setting a vision for the product, which requires research, research and research some more the market, the customer and the problem they have that you’re trying to solve
— Being an expert in the product’s competition
— Spreading the product’s vision to the company and team. You need to be an evangelist for your product, as its success relies on every team member — from sales to developer — understanding the vision and being at least a little bit passionate about the product as well
— Building an actionable plan to reach the vision. Own the product strategy and product roadmap
— Developing product pricing, positioning strategies and go-to-market plans
— Working with engineering, design and marketing teams to plan, build and launch high-quality products
— Be in constant contact with Customer Support to review user stories and implement them in the product
Identifying and assessing opportunities for your product. Evaluate product ideas and decide which product ideas are worth pursuing, and which are not
— Handling all the product’s documentation
— Owning the product’s performance KPI’s, including financial indicators
— Act as point of the first reference for all product related enquiries
— And last, but not least, manages product not people.
As the Product Owner in Scrum
— Capturing the customer requirements as user stories and explaining why they are important to the team
— Leading requirements gathering efforts as needed — consulting stakeholders, marketing, clients, etc
— Attending scrum meetings including standups, retrospectives, and demos
— Being the only person responsible for ordering the product backlog:
1. Clearly expressing the product backlog items
2. Ordering the items in the product backlog to best achieve goals and missions
3. Optimizing the value of the work the development team performs
4. Ensuring that the product backlog is visible, transparent, and clear to all
5. Showing what the Scrum Team will work on next
— Leading backlog grooming to decompose/estimate stories
— Answering questions from developers, clarifying requirements, etc.
— Write acceptance criteria
— Demonstrating latest iterations to stakeholders and gathering feedback.
